Monday 5th May, 11am - 4pm

A celebration of May Day: dance displays throughout the day, along with street arts, crafts in various locations including...


Humberstone Gate and the Clock Tower area:

  • 10.45am: Leicester Town Crier publicly announces the event in the streets
  • 10.45am: Lord Mayor's speech
  • 11am, 12pm & 1pm: Traditional morris dancing by Leicester Morris Men
  • 11am - 4pm: Maypole and clog dancing. Pirate and mermaid performances (family activities) by Bill Brookman and Friends
  • 11.30am & 1.30pm: Highland dancing with pipers by Seaforth Highlanders
  • 11.30am, 12.30pm: Period costume performance by Quorn Folk Dance Club
  • 12.30pm & 2pm: Traditional and modern Irish dancing by Doherty Academy of Irish Dance
  • 1.30pm & 2.30pm: The Polesie Polish Folk Ensemble
  • 2pm: Royal Scottish Country Dance Society and Piper
  • 3pm – 4pm: Big Finale end of day event, everyone welcome: Folk Dancing with Ceilidh band - Bang on the Wall

Gallowtreegate area:

  • 11am – 4pm: Street entertainment, including: Balloon Art and Sylvester the Minstrel Jester, Penny Farthing, Nautical Nonsense Pirates, Fester and Turnip Jesters, Mechanical Morris Men.

Town Hall Square:

  • 11am - 2.30pm: Children's activity area and the chance for the whole family to have a go at maypole dancing. Stalls, craft events and story-telling. Country and morris dancing with Jerusalem Jammers. International dancing with Geoff Weston.

Town Hall Square stage area:

  • 11am - 3pm: Folk singer/guitarist Roger Wilson, Norcsalordie acoustic duo, GU4 folk harmony group, and an audience with Daniel Lambert!

Castle Park Gardens:

  • 11am - 2.30pm: Maypole dancing and displays of morris, clog and folk dancing. Performances by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, also the Piper and Jerusalem Jammers. Children's story-telling.
The day will end with a Ceilidh from 3pm - 4pm on Humberstone Gate with Bang on the Wall band! (Folk dancing that all the family can get involved in).
