The media, and those that generally don’t think much of the youth of today, might have us believe that young people are yobs, troublemakers, or worse.
If they’re feeling generous, they might go as far as admitting that not all young people out there are bad; but saying that not all young people engage in anti-social behaviour or crime implies that most young people do – and we know that it simply isn’t true.
We think that too much attention is focussed on the negatives to do with young people. We’re not saying that people and services should ignore the negatives; just that we shouldn’t overlook the positive.
One Brilliant Future was about…
-
reinforcing the message that youth anti-social behaviour and crime is perpetrated by the minority, not the majority.
- saying that we’ve got a lot more to be proud of than we’ve got to complain about when it comes to the young people of Leicester.
- learning to see the ordinary, day-to-day positives of young people, instead of only taking notice when a young person does something extraordinary.
-
saying – out loud - that if young people are the future, then Leicester’s future looks brilliant!
The One Brilliant Future campaign was part of the city’s Youth Crime Action Plan, the aim of which is to prevent and reduce youth crime and anti-social behaviour, support young victims, and achieve a greater balance in how young people are portrayed and perceived. One Brilliant Future is funded by the government’s Department for Education and the city’s Youth Offending Service, and is being delivered in conjunction with One Leicester.
This was a chance to gather positive images and messages about young people, from young people, and use them deliver a One Brilliant Future poster campaign in the autumn of 2011.
