Leicester's Blooming in 2010

This year, Leicester city centre is truly blooming!  A total of 116,854 bedding plants, 433 hanging baskets and 162 flower troughs have been brought into in the city along with 11 free standing flower towers to bring colour and vibrancy to the city centre.

Leicester City Council have worked in partnership with retailers and businesses across the city centre to bring the displays to the city this year. Stewart Doughty, Parks Manager at Leicester City Council, says “We are proud of our city and care about it's environment. We know flowers, plants and our parks and green open spaces are important to our enjoyment of the city.”

“We installed all material in early June with the baskets in flower as they had been planted up and grown on under glass at our suppliers nursery to get them established. The baskets should remain in position and continue flowering until October.”

City centre retailers, businesses and the city council agreed the locations of the brackets which are positioned around key locations within and approaching the city centre.

The main plants used for the 2010 display include deep red geranium, white and blue vein surfinia, yellow bidens, green trailing helichrysum and lysmachia.  In the Cultural Quarter, in consultation with our cultural Quarter partners, we’ve gone for a slightly different mix of purple surfinia, white and blue vein surfinia and white bacopa.
