Leicester: aiming for a city of educational excellence

One Leicester - Aiming for a city of educational excellence

Leicester City Council and its partners are dedicated to making a real difference for pupils, parents, students, teachers, support staff and the community.

Schools and colleges in Leicester are continually improving. Putting education at the heart of our city will help improve opportunities for everyone and achieve our ambition to be the best city in the region and the UK.

With two major projects at the forefront of the city's improvement plans, education in Leicester is set to improve even more.

Leicester is also home to two internationally renowned universities - De Montfort University and the University of Leicester.

Building schools for the future (BSF)

Leicester is one of the first areas in the country to deliver the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme

It is the city's largest schools building programme for over 50 years. The aim is to rebuild or renew every secondary school and we have already delivered four schools: Beaumont Leys School (BSF School of the Year and Winner of the Grand Prix awarded by Partnerships for Schools), Judgemeadow Community College, Soar Valley College and Fullhurst Community College.

The four new schools offer the latest in technology and learning environments to inspire pupils, teachers and the local community.

Work on the next phase is due to begin in Autumn 2010.

Raising Achievement Plan

The Raising Achievement Strategy is Leicester City Council’s plan to help to improve the aspirations and achievements of our children and young people.

We are working with schools, students, parents and carers to raise standards of attainment and to close the well-being gap for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people.

Along with the Children and Young People’s Plan, the Raising Achievement Strategy will also help to develop and support staff in Leicester’s schools and colleges so they can help to deliver high quality services to our younger people.
